Halloween should be all about good, clean fun we can all get behind. Sure, some folks will say “hey, this is against our religion” or “that costume is a bit too risky, don't yah think?!” but those are common ground differences of opinion. Easily settled under a “live and let live” principle.
But depicting a hanging is beyond bad taste: it's insensitive.
Depicting a woman's hanging is worse: if it doesn't promote violence against women it at least makes the imagery common cost.
And showing a woman hanging around Halloween is, if you know a little bit of your history, even darker, bringing to mind the 14 women who were hung during the 1692 Salem Witch trials.
Before deciding on a Halloween decoration project, ask yourself these questions:
- Is the only real purpose of this Halloween decoration to celebrate Halloween and make it more fun — especially for the kids
- Does my Halloween decoration depict something that would make me cry if I would have had a family member in a similar situation (this question avoids you making life-like car accident Halloween props, for example)
